Decision Making - In my current position, decision making by evaluation information and taking
appropriate action to meet a desired goal is commonplace, and handling multiple jobs
simultaneously is a must. Weatherford Post Office has 47 routes, a Million Dollar BMAU,
Contract Postal Units, 4hr dedicated collection route, and a Retail Operation with 7-10K + Walk
in Revenue consistently. With the first truck arriving at 3:00 and Dispatch of Value at 18:40, my
task is to run efficient clerk and carrier operations in an attitude of responsive service to
customers while meeting strict deadlines. By constantly matching work hours to workload,
adjusting territory, and through office and street observations/inspections I have maximized City
Delivery Operation.
Operation Budget – With our current operating it is necessary to be prudent with supplies,
facility costs, and FAMS. However, the ability to maintain operating cost and expenditures in
relationship to an authorized budget almost directly correlates with ability to plan and schedule
work, as labor cost is the vast majority to the budget. By delegating work according to current
employee abilities, giving clear expectations, and understanding the ability for growth of each
person, my employees have ownership and accountability in their work.
Safety – The most important task as a management official is to provide a safe and healthful
environment for employees and customers. It is critical to have total employee involvement.
Every accident is preventable. At the Weatherford Post Office, our Near Miss/1767 program has
identified hazards and unsafe practices which were abated before an accident happened. Through
training and written programs I have tracked safety and health programs per PEG guidelines in
the safely toolkit. Weekly Safety Talks and JSAs have kept safety at the forefront of daily
activities, and safety and Health Committee meetings have continued employee involvement.
Proper administration of our Safety Program concerning work and home-life safety has kept
injury and absenteeism to a minimum, which positively impacts our families and work
productivity. We were recently recertified as a VPP Star site.
Communication – As a Supervisor, it is important to handle all matters, especially when the
other supervisors have left for the day. To ensure I understand what need to be done, I document
instructions. Afterwards, I have a group meeting with the workers to let them know what was to
be done. This helps the workers to know exactly what was expected of them. Daily, I practice the
same method of documentary to ensure communications is relayed effectively. I take messages,
leave notes and make calls throughout the day, so it is important that my communication skills
are comprehendible. In the afternoon information for the morning supervisor is gathered and must
be received upon their arrival the following day. If I am not clear in my communications, they
may have some difficulties in their scheduling that day.
Labor Relation – Most issues are related to overtime equitability and correcting employee
deficiencies. With regular meetings and dialogue with local unions, most Article 8 issues can be
avoided entirely, and management rights can prevent grievances during emergency operation.
Discipline in Postal Service must be for just cause and corrective in nature. Corrective action is a
powerful tool to control absenteeism and employee deficiencies, which directly relates to
efficiency of operations. Management’s right to discipline employees is fundamental and
essential to maintain a productive workplace.
Diverse Workforce – The USPS is committed to achieving an environment that respects and
values a diverse workforce. Diversity is strength for our organization and promotes innovation,
creativity, and growth of existing concepts. To discriminate against someone because of race,
color, religion, sex, national origin, age, or disability is not only morally wrong, but against the
law.
Leadership – I can define assignments clearly and delegate work effectively and fairly. I can deal
objectively with subordinates and train/develop employees to their fullest capacity of growth. If
you chose me for this position you are getting a leader to motivate and teach a team to take
ownership in an efficient operation.
